Challenge

Explore linguistic / literary figurations

The objective for this project is to experiment and explore linguistic or literary figurations to produce a visual argument and visual statement based on the thesis.

Utilizing rhetorical theoretical systems and analysis, I had to produce a research-based scholarly project based on my thesis and develop visual evidence that will support my thesis claims.

PROCESS

Identify key component of a meme and justify its importance

I identified humor as the key component of a meme. Jokes are low budget and contagious. Humor when accompanied by exaggeration does not go unnoticed and that works for memes too.

I decided to portray humor through language - verbal and non-verbal.

The Meme Podium - Humor and Exaggeration

Taking inspiration from the Pressing Conference by Helen Toomer, I came up with the concept of 'The Meme Podium', an immersive installation and a participatory project.

The aim was to explore the humorous nature of memes in politics and WHY have memes evolved as a type of political propaganda.

I set up the classroom as the White House podium and with a 'meme seal.' I laid out the props and gave a demo of an exaggerated presidential speech which my classmates enjoyed.

Once done, I then invited my classmates to -

"Enact a Speech in the way you think would make a Meme. Use the prompts/props if you like."

The results were amazing! They all let themselves loose, enunciated their speeches and laughed and made the rest of the class laugh in the process. As I expected, their interpretation of memes included humor and exaggeration which proved my argument!
