Designing Against Disinformation

Challenge

Create a proposal for a new technology

Taking an issue related to my thesis, the challenge was to extrapolate into the near future and create a proposal for a new ‘technology’ (a tool, strategy, system, frame, philosophy, etc.) that will facilitate / mitigate the chosen issue. It was implied to use design in a clever and incisive way to demonstrate how I would employ this new technology in reality.

Researching on disinformation

I realized that memes are one of the reasons for misinformation and evetually disinformation. I started researching on disinformation via Whatsapp and Facebook and came across Facebook's strategy to tackle disinformation via fact-checkers. However those have a few loopholes and so I decided to improvise on that.

Fact-checked branding and improvisation

Improvising on the existing strategy, I created a design campaign called fact checked. I added new features to post sharing like providing the facts, providing extra links to verify the facts, providing the source of information, rating the source of information.

I also created a fact-check emoticon to be used when the authenticity of a post is in doubt. And other features like Alert on any fake news going around your area, and Fact-Checked Design Campaign (News Feed, Messenger, Profile Picture, Emoticons).
